Likely the exe is a bit different thus resulting in a different signature than what the add-ons might be looking for. I learnt mostly through reading, and pressing all the buttons until something worked. AirHauler even works fine with Steam as a non-Steam game. It probably isn't that much and invovles registry keys and different paths and exe file sizes but there are a lot of add-ons and expansions out there.
